Lifestyle Medicine

A better way to find health.

Did you know?

Diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are REVERSIBLE?
Obesity, dementia, stroke and many cancers are PREVENTABLE?

As the leading causes of death and disability in our country, these conditions also account for most of the healthcare dollars spent.

Clinical practice guidelines recommend “lifestyle change” as the primary treatment — before starting medications or thinking about procedures.

But with so much conflicting information from friends, family, the internet, and social media, how do you know where to start?

At Verity, we follow true, evidence-based medicine that focuses on six key areas scientifically proven to impact overall health and reduce disease:

Proper Nutrition

Sufficient Physical Activity

Stress Management

Supportive Social Relationships

Avoiding Unhealthy Substances

Adequate Sleep

As experts in Lifestyle Medicine and Culinary Medicine, our physicians are leading the way in combatting the chronic disease epidemic – one patient at a time.

We focus on preventing and treating disease by teaching patients and their families about healthy lifestyle choices and encouraging them to change their behaviors.

While many of us might not be ready for a new way of doing things or don’t see the importance of making change, we must admit that seeing results takes work. Our practitioners build authentic and supportive relationships, whether you need a gentle nudge or a big push in a healthier direction.

We do not believe in imposing our beliefs or methods onto our patients. We’ll collaborate with you to develop personalized goals and treatment plans that fit with your daily life, culture and budget.

We firmly believe that for lifestyle change to be sustainable, healthy choices should be the easier option. It’s a junk-food jungle out there!

One more thing…we lead by example – your doctors have adopted these healthy behaviors ourselves, so join us! We’re in this together.

  • Participate in community programs such as Walk with a Doc.
  • Request one of our physicians to present at your next event.
  • Attend a class in our teaching kitchen.
  • Come to a plant-based potluck.
  • Tell us about your ideas for a healthier community!

Want to find a path to better health? Start by coloring your plate.

Simply increasing the number of fruits and vegetables you eat every day is a huge win.

It’s a fact: People who eat more plants have less disease, less disability and a lower risk of death. Fiber, minerals, vitamins and phytonutrients help us fight disease. Our bodies use nutrients from colorful fruits and vegetables to activate our immune system, aid digestion, build and repair cells and fuel our metabolism.

Plan for 8 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables every single day. The more colorful they are, the larger the variety of disease-fighting nutrients you will have so, try to eat a variety of colors:

GREEN
Spinach, kale, broccoli, collards, brussels sprouts, kiwi, avocado, cilantro, parsley

ORANGE/YELLOW
Bell peppers, pineapple, mango, pumpkin, squash, carrots

RED
Apples, pears, watermelon, radishes, beets, strawberries

BLUE/PURPLE
Purple potatoes, blueberries, eggplant, figs, purple cabbage
